Rupa & the April Fishes just completed a socio-musical tour of the US/Mexico Border passing through border crossings, talking with guards, visiting a cemetery of unmarked graves while also playing shows from Tijuana to Lafayette, LA. Rupa and the band blogged about their journey on their facebook page and at Ode. The tour served dual purposes as both a music tour bringing the band's music to new cities and as a field research trip to gather information for the group's upcoming project on immigration and health rights.
Steve Hochman of Around The World at AOL's Spinner.com interviewed Rupa while the band was in the middle of the trip and posted a very nice article yesterday. Of Rupa he writes, "she sees the matter of immigrant rights ultimately governed by the bottom line, her music, she stresses, is about another bottom line -- one that can't be drawn on a ledger or a map."
