One of the most inspirational success stories in African music
to release a new album in early 2010

In 2006, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars burst onto the world stage with the help of a moving documentary film that told the powerful and inspirational story of the group’s formation in a West African refugee camp. From these humble beginnings, the band went on to release one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful world music releases of the past few years. They were profiled on the Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, and CBS Sunday Morning, performed at Central Park SummerStage, Bonnaroo, the Fillmore and SxSW and earned numerous “Best of 2006” accolades.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have now joined forces with Cumbancha, the acclaimed record label that in three short years of existence has become one of the top independent producers of international talent. An auspicious year, 2006 was also the year that Cumbancha first started making waves in the global music scene, releasing revered albums by Andy Palacio & the Garifuna Collective, Habib Koité, Rupa & the April Fishes, the Idan Raichel Project and others.

“Cumbancha and Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars first hit the scene around the same time,” points out Cumbancha founder Jacob Edgar, “and I was always impressed with their story, their music and the wonderful team that has helped introduce them to the world.” In fact, Edgar and Zach Niles, the film’s co-director (with Banker White), both grew up in the state of Vermont, and they eventually met up in person and became friends. “I’m very excited about the partnership with the Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars,” notes Edgar, “It’s a natural and exciting addition to the Cumbancha family.”

The band will be producing their next album in New Orleans this summer with the help of Steve Berlin, a member of Los Lobos who has produced albums by Rickie Lee Jones, Michelle Shocked, Susan Tedeschi, Angelique Kidjo and many others. The album will be released in the first quarter of 2010.
