Indian Superstar To Embark on Major US & Canada Tour This Summer
One of India's most beloved voices to release his first international album this fall.
JULY 8, 2009 – There is no greater star in Indian popular music today then Kailash Kher, a revered singer whose prodigious vocal gifts and inspiring personality have made him a household name across the sub-continent. He has lent his unique voice to dozens of Bollywood films, performed in front of crowds that number in the tens of thousands and is a popular television personality thanks to his role as a judge on Indian Idol, the local version of the popular talent search. One of the biggest celebrities in South Asia, Kher has recorded numerous chart-topping blockbusters with his band Kailasa, and his rapturous and soulful voice has captivated millions.
The magic of Kailash Kher & Kailasa will be introduced to the world with the release of Yatra (Nomadic Souls), their first internationally distributed album, to be available in stores this fall on Cumbancha. To prepare for the album's launch, the band is embarking on a major three-month tour that will take them to some of the most prestigious venues in the US and Canada. The new album will feature brand new songs alongside original new studio and unplugged recordings of some of the band's most appealing hits.
Kher's rich, powerful voice has earned him comparisons to Pakistani legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, but his populist approach and knack for writing catchy hits with his musical collaborators, Naresh and Paresh Kamath, have helped him bridge the divide between traditional and contemporary styles. While his music is thoroughly modern and influenced by rock, funk, reggae and even techno, Kher's voice recalls the ancient history of India, and he is just as likely to include a traditional village rhythm or a sacred Sufi chant in the mix as he is a jamming electric guitar or hip-hop beat.
"I first heard Kailash's amazing track "Tauba Tauba" blasting out of a radio back in 2007, when I was zipping down the road in an autorickshaw in the Indian state of Kerala," recalls Cumbancha founder Jacob Edgar, "I made the driver slam on the brakes so I could find out who was making this incredible blend of funky pop and Indian roots music. I finally found out later it was Kailash Kher & Kailasa and I've been a big fan ever since. I am so excited to have them as part of the Cumbancha roster and to help introduce the world to a group that millions of people already revere."
A newly recorded version of "Tauba Tauba" will appear on the Cumbancha release, which will hit the stores on September 29th, 2009. Before that, the physical album will be available exclusively at Kailash Kher & Kailasa's shows throughout the summer and in digital format at http://kailashkher.bandcamp.com.
