In a long awaited return to North America, Zimbabwe's Afro-Soul Diva Chiwoniso will hit the road in the US and Canada this July for a series of performances at summer festivals and clubs. The tour includes shows at Celebrate Brooklyn, Sunfest, Boston's Museum Of Fine Art, Montreal's Festival International Nuits d'Afrique and NYC's Le Poisson Rouge. Chiwoniso performs entrancing and uplifting songs with ancient soul and modern spirit. Backed by the mesmerizing interlocking melodies of the mbira and the deep grooves of an all-star band, Chiwoniso's voice resounds with defiant strength and profound tenderness. With a sound that recalls the fire of Angelique Kidjo, the inspiration of Oliver Mtukudzi, the rebellion of Thomas Mapfumo and the soul of India.Aire, Chiwoniso is one of the most exciting talents in African music today.
Chiwoniso's live performances across Europe over the past year continue to win over fans and critics. A recent performance at Germany's Africa Festival honored the tragic passing of her friend and collaborator Sam Mtukudzi, the son of Oliver Mtukudzi. The moving tribute was filmed and broadcast on the ARTE website. Check out the burning live version of "Vanorapa" from the concert here.
